I don't know which is more disgusting but you should try marmite (the UK version) and compare. My theory is it's the scrapings of dead yeast at the bottom of old beer barrels. Apparently it was invented during WWI but I fail to see why it has survived to the present day when the UK is no longer being blockaded by U-boats…
